Anne M. Kaplinsky
(1911 - 1942)

Age 31. 35 Martin Street, Holyoke, MA. Born on 1/10/1911, in Holyoke. Died of burns (death certificate). Cadet teacher at Elmwood School (elementary school), Holyoke. Also employed at the store of her older brother Nathan (not present), Elmwood Market, in Holyoke. Known as Anna. Went to Boston late Friday with a hometown girl friend (the latter was not present at the blaze). Attended the club with her local cousin Edward "Israel" Loman, age 44, of Brookline, MA, dead. "According to relatives, the Kaplinsky girl has not been found, and her father left Holyoke yesterday [Sunday] afternoon to search for her in Boston" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). "Her brother-in-law...and two brothers...viewed her body at Northern mortuary...and made positive identification" (Springfield Republican, Springfield, MA, 11/30/1942). "Miss Kaplinsky had been badly burned but identification was made possible thru a class ring...a wrist watch and part of a beaver coat" (Holyoke Daily Transcript and Telegram, 11/30/1942). Was single. Was a graduate of Holyoke High School, 1928 ('28 The Annual yearbook: "Anna is the girl who has such good-looking dresses and wears them so well"). Graduated Fitchburg State Teachers College, Fitchburg, MA. Recalled by a former Elmwood School pupil (in July 2012): "While at the Elmwood school, I entered the first grade in the fall of 1942 and I believe my teacher...was a casualty of the horrendous Cocoanut Grove fire...It was my first experience with the finality of death of someone I knew..." (cocoanutgrovefire.org). First name was shown as "Annie" (birth certificate), "Ann" (death certificate and the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties), "Anne" (news accounts), and "Anna" (era street listings). One of two Grove victims from the western Bay State city of Holyoke (also Miss Mary Rose O'Sullivan, age 25, a patron in a separate party). Parents Mr. Morris, same address, and the late Mrs. Elizabeth (Laskin) Kaplinsky. Burial at Sons of Zion Cemetery, Fairview (Chicopee), MA (given name spelled "Anne" on her stone). Middle name Miriam.
