O'Neil
Anna Rita "Sally" O'Neil
(1923 - 1942)

Age 19. 28 Decatur Street, North Cambridge (Cambridge), MA. Born 10/28/1923, in Cambridge. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Was a waitress at Cottage Farm Grille, in Cambridge (death certificate). Known as "Anna (or "Ann") Rita." Also known as "Sally." Was the maid of honor at the wedding of her older brother John, age 28, to the former Miss Claudia Nadeau, age 21, at 7 o'clock earlier Saturday evening in Cambridge. Was seated at a table in the main dining room near the passageway entrance to the New Lounge with the newlyweds and last-minute best man, John F. Doyle, age 25, of Cambridge, all dead. The group had been driven to the nearby Latin Quarter club by Clarence Nadeau, age 30 (not present), an older brother of the bride, where they planned to celebrate nuptials. "He left the party there and does not know why they changed their plans and entered the Cocoanut Grove" (The Boston Evening Globe, 12/03/1942). A photo of the beaming bridal couple by Grove roving photographer Doris "Lynne" Andrews, age 24 (Born 6/09/1918. Died on 9/19/1945, pulmonary tuberculosis, age 27. Last residence Boston), taken less than one hour before the blaze was the last ever made at the club, published on the front page of the 12/03/1942 Boston Globe (Miss O'Neil was not visible). Was single. Surname was misspelled "O'Neill" (with two "l"s) on her death certificate, correct spelling on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties (but the surnames of her brother and his new wife were both misspelled "O'Neill"). With her brother was one of 16 sibling pairs lost in the blaze (also half-siblings Earl Tattrie and Mrs. Harrilyn "Dolly" Taft, ages 31 and 21, and the Fitzgerald brothers of Wilmington, MA, four dead). Was one of seven individuals named "O'Neil" to perish at the club, tied with "Sullivan" for the most frequent surname among casualties. Parents Mr. and Mrs. John and Helen (Donahue) O'Neil, same address. Burial with the bridal couple at North Cambridge Catholic Cemetery (alternately known as "St. John's Cemetery"), Cambridge.
