In a reported party of six with friends Miss Eleanor Murray, age 22 (Born 3/24/1920. Died as Eleanor M. Daniels on 2/02/1981, in Barnstable, MA, age 60), of Worcester, Miss Marion Tisdell, age 22 (Born 1/06/1920. Died as Marion C. Ewick on 6/16/2000, age 80. Last residence Holden, MA), of Shrewsbury, MA, both injured, and three unnamed men (reported all dead). "Miss Alice G. Deignan...was trampled to death in the mad rush for safety" (Worcester Telegram, 11/30/1942). Her remains were identified at Northern Mortuary in Boston. Was single. Graduate of Becker College, Worcester, 1938, where she and Miss Tisdell had been classmates. "She played the piano as fast as she typed. The waltz was A-1 of her dance steps" ('38 Beckerlogue, Becker College yearbook). Miss Murray was subject of happier news five months later when her "sizzling 535" topped all qualifiers in a Class A women's candlepin bowling tournament held at the Strand Alleys in Worcester (fire was referred to in a description by the Worcester Telegram, 4/15/1943: "...pretty Eleanor Murray, the girl who was severely burned in the Boston Cocoanut Grove blaze last November..."). Surname was misspelled "Deegnan" (with double "e"s) on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (correct spelling on her death certificate). Was the lone victim from the Worcester County reservoir town of West Boylston. Was the third member of her immediate family to die within six months, also her older brother Capt. George Deignan, U.S. Army, on 6/26/1942 (self-inflicted pistol shot), and her father Francis J. "Frank," on 8/04/1942 (natural causes). Mother Mrs. Nellie M. (MacDuffie), same address, passed away three years later in 1945. Burial (with her late brother and father) at St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Middle name Gertrude.
