Was known by his middle name Clyde. First name Albert. Was spending a Thanksgiving-weekend leave with his hometown friend and former schoolmate Osborne Rainer, Jr., age 18, a civilian student at M.I.T., dead. Both were 1940 graduates of Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery, AL. Both were previously fraternity brothers at Auburn University, Auburn, AL. Reported by the 11/30/1942 Boston Herald to be in a party of four including Miss Jane Peavey, age 20, and Miss Marilen Playdon, age 19, Emerson College roommates, both dead, and an unidentified fourth individual (possibly the above Mr. Rainer). Reported in the 12/01/1942 Boston Evening American to be at the club with Corp. Arthur Mead, U.S. Army, age 31, of Glens Falls, NY, also based at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod, also dead (Corp. Mead was known to be dining with an acquaintance, Mrs. Marie Mason, age 33, of Cleverdale, NY, a victim). Was raised in Montgomery, AL. Was single. Employed the past summer as a welder in Mobile, AL, then started classes at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL, until his army enlistment on October 7. Sent a photo taken days earlier to a relation back home (image reproduced here, from the Alabama Journal, Montgomery, AL, 11/30/1942) with an ironic positive description of military life: "I'd like to say here that I am one of the luckiest fellows alive"). Moderate build (WWII draft registration, July '41: 5' 7," 140 lbs.). One of seven Alabamians claimed by the holocaust (also Ensign John Albritton, Sr., U.S.N.R., age 28, Lieut. Charles "Barney" Ireland, Jr., U.S.N.R., age 24, William Robert Norton, age 20, Broaddus Robinson, age 20, Lieut. John Stapleton, Jr., age 25, plus the above Mr. Rainer). One of three taken from the Cotton State city of Montgomery (also Ensign Albritton and Mr. Rainer). the latter one of four municipalities outside New England to lose as many as three residents each (also New York, NY, six dead, and Baltimore, MD, and Green Bay, WI, three apiece).
