Age 32. 4 Fitz Terrace, Wilmington, MA. Born 8/19/1910, in Wilmington. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Foreman at Walsh Bros. (construction), Cambridge, MA. Was the second-youngest of four Fitzgerald brothers to perish in an ill-fated main dining room party of 12 (also his siblings Henry, age 30, U.S. Army Air Corps private home on leave, James, age 38, and John, age 41, both civilians). Lone group survivor Pvt. Robert Horrigan, U.S. Army, age 29 (Born 10/04/1913. Died 5/09/1997, age 83), of Turners Falls (Montague), MA, also on leave, informed a sister (not present) of party victim Miss Natalie McCullough, age 31, of Saugus, MA, that the group had just arrived from dinner at the nearby Parker House hotel, had been seated and served drinks, but had not yet touched them. Recalled by Pvt. Horrigan to the 11/29/1967 Greenfield Recorder, Greenfield, MA, that there was a "loud commotion" followed by a "ball of fire" shooting along the wall near the main bar. Latter stated that in the confusion he was slammed in the face: "I knew nothing more until...I heard someone say, 'This one's alive,' and then a crackling of glass'" (Greenfield Recorder, 11/29/1967). Was listed with brothers Henry and John among 60 "probable identifications" Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Misreported in numerous sources with brothers James and John to be in active military service (youngest brother Henry was the lone armed forces member among the four victim siblings). Was single. Trim build (WWII draft registration: 5' 11½," 160 lbs.). Parents Mrs. Mary A. (Walsh), same address, and the late Mr. William J. Fitzgerald. Observed by the above Pvt. Horrigan in 1967 of Mrs. Fitzgerald: "She was a wonderful woman. Despite her terrible loss she worked all day to find out where I was, how I was, and then notified my parents..." (Greenfield Recorder, 11/29/1967). Account of the stunning family loss was widely reported on and funeral proceedings of the victim brothers photographed in era newspapers. Burial with his late siblings at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington (stone misstates his birth year as "1911," one of three Fitzgerald siblings with incorrect headstone birth years). Middle name Augustine.
