
Age 25. 1527 Shirley Street, Columbia, SC. Born 6/23/1917, Atlanta, GA. Died of asphyxiation and burns (death certificate). Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, attached to the U.S. Navy heavy cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, in Boston for repairs following the North African campaign. Was staying at the Hotel Bellevue, Boston, with his wife Mary, age 21, dead. Wife had traveled the past week by train from South Carolina to join her husband of eight months. "Captain Goodpasture was the highest ranking officer in the armed services yet reported dead in the disastrous fire that snuffed out a total of 440 lives" (The Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta, GA, 11/30/1942). "Survivors said that when panic spread through the crowd of diners and dancers...Captain Goodpasture shouted: 'Quiet down, everybody'" (Florence Morning News, Florence, SC, 12/01/1942). His remains were said to be found near a window through which he reportedly helped many to safety. Boston Daily Record, 11/30/1942: "His clothes were identified in the wreckage, and his body removed to the Chelsea Naval Hospital." Likely the "Marine Corps captain not further identified..." with shipmate Lieut. J. Duncan Elliott, U.S. Navy, age 27, and his wife Marion, age 25 (both dead), also registered at the above Hotel Bellevue, who, "...attendants reported...had left for the night club..." (Times-Herald, Washington, DC, 11/30/1942). "They had not definitely planned to attend the Cocoanut Grove...relatives said, and it was thought...that they had gone on the spur of the moment..." (The State, Columbia, SC, 12/01/1942). Had attended Purdue University in Indiana and Emory University in Atlanta. Was a graduate of The Citadel, Charleston, SC, 1940. Joined the Marine Corps upon his graduation. A stained-glass window in the cadet chapel at The Citadel was dedicated in May 1943 to Capt. Goodpasture: "...who gave his life in the Cocoanut Grove fire while saving the lives of more than forty people" (The News and Courier, Charleston, SC, 5/16/1943). Parents Dr. Walter C., Sr., and Mrs. Alice M. (Christiansen) Goodpasture. Father, a prominent Atlanta surgeon, was notified of his son's death by a telegram received Sunday night. Burial with his wife at Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, SC. Middle name Clinton.
