Children were permitted meanwhile to remain in the joint custody of their maternal grandparents and a paternal aunt. With her husband was one of 56 married couples present to both perish, including 22 pairs with minors, resulting in 43 children (under the age of 21) being orphaned (plus one child orphaned by the loss of her widowed father, victim Edward "Israel" Loman, age 44).
