Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders football game at Fenway Park in Boston with his longtime pal James Byrne, age 44 (Born 6/13/1898. Died 7/16/1967, age 69. Last residence Milton, MA), of Dorchester (Boston), MA, injured. Both continued on to the Grove. His remains were transported to Northern Mortuary, Boston. The Boston Post, 12/01/1942: "Up at the City Hospital James Burns [sic] stirs in the bed where he is critically ill and calls for Joe McCarthy. They were close friends. But Joe McCarthy will be buried tomorrow [Wednesday] morning..." Was engaged, fiancée Miss Marie Papalegis, of Cambridge, MA. Fiancée was to join the men at the club, "...but another engagement intervened" (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942, actual wording!). Marriage was planned for the coming December. "He was a good natured and a steady sort" (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942). Was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School, Boston, 1921. Solid build (WWII draft registration, February '42: 5' 9½," 185 lbs.). Employed in sales 21 years at the above provisions firm (known for its "Armour Franks" and later its nationally-marketed "Dial" brand deodorant soap, originally a byproduct of meat processing). One of five Grove victims from the Hub "neighborhood" of Charlestown (also James Kelley, age 25, Miss Kathleen McLaughlin, age 23, Miss Gwendolyn Snively, age 17, and Joseph Sullivan, age 27, all patrons). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Patrick and Johanna J. (Breen) McCarthy, same address. Burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA.
