Age 42. 21 Merrymount Road, Quincy, MA. Born 5/20/1900, Gattinara, Italy. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Housewife (death certificate). Husband Vito, age 57, also died. Couple was in a main dining room party of seven with Mr. and Mrs. Jacob "Jake" and Ethel Slate, ages 53 and 48 respectively, of Quincy, Mr. and Mrs. Dominic and Adele Penardi, ages 59 and 51, of Stoughton, MA, and Mrs. Jeanette Zall, age 35, of Plymouth, MA (the latter was a married younger sister of Mrs. Slate). Mr. Slate (Born 12/15/1888. Died 8/10/1979, age 90. Last residence Quincy) and Mrs. Penardi (Born 4/16/1891. Died 2/23/1979, age 87. Last residence Stoughton) were the lone two survivors. With her husband were enjoying their first night out for recreation together in ten years. According to Mrs. Penardi, had accompanied the latter and Mrs. Slate from their dining room table to the foyer ladies powder room when the fire broke. Her remains at first could not be traced: "Searchers have not been able to locate any of her clothing, her wedding ring or a large diamond solitaire of more than a carat which she was wearing" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 12/02/1942). A brother of her victim husband, Charles Caradonna (not present), fearing that another family might be burying his missing sister-in-law: "...raced from Quincy today [Wednesday] to the scene of the funeral, several miles away...Caradonna arrived just too late to view the body" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 12/02/1942). Brother-in-law was assured by mourners that the body interred (unnamed in news reports) was, in fact, the correct one. Was widely reported as the last Grove casualty identified at Southern Mortuary in Boston when finally located on December 2 (misplaced remains of victim Ensign John Bauer, age 27, U.S.N.R., brought later from Waterman's Funeral Home to Southern Mortuary, were not confirmed until December 5). "Identification had been delayed by the condition of the body..." (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 12/03/1942). Identity was verified by means of a four-tooth dental bridge. To the U.S. in 1920. Known generally as "Jeanne" (or "Jean"). Shown as "Marie" in the 1940 federal census and in some era street listings. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence and Lucia (Cametti) Patriaca. Burial with her victim husband at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, MA.
