Age 23. 4203 Gelston Drive, Baltimore, MD. Born 5/22/1919, Leonardtown, MD. Died of burns (death certificate). Ensign, U.S. Navy. "He was serving at the Boston navy yard and had been ordered to report to Yorktown, Va., on December 5, just a week from the time he was killed" (The Sun, Baltimore, MD, 11/30/1942). Companion (or companions) if any at the club unknown. Identity of his remains were confirmed at Chelsea Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA, by his military "dog tag" (First Naval District inquest transcript, 11/30/1942). Was raised in Leonardtown, MD. Graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, MD, 1939. Was single. Received his commission in the Naval Reserves the past spring. Commenced active duty in September. Lodged with an aunt at the Baltimore address above (address shown on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety casualties list). "The deceased was a splendid young man of sterling character with high ideals and every promise of a brilliant future" (Saint Mary's Beacon, Leonardtown, MD, 12/04/1942). Trim build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11," 156 lbs.). Was the youngest of five Maryland residents to perish in the disaster (also Lieut. Jesse Duncan Elliott, Jr., U.S. Navy, age 27, his wife Marion, age 25, Daniel Singer, age 32, and Royal Leo Spies, age 28, latter two both attached to the U.S. Navy). Parents Mrs. Mildred F. (Foxwell), of Leonardtown, MD, and the late Mr. Stephen M. Jones. His father died two months before the blaze. Burial with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. One of five Grove victims interred at Arlington National (also William Clift, U.S.C.G., age 55, Lieut. Arthur Dzendolet, U.S.N.R., age 28, and the above Lieut. Elliott and his non-military wife Marion), final single resting grounds for the most Grove casualties outside of Massachusetts. Middle name Harris.
