Age 18. 473 East Eighth Street, South Boston (Boston), MA. Born on 9/15/1924, in South Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Occupation: "none" (death certificate). Known generally as "Ruthie." At the Grove with her best friend, Miss Mary Ellen "Mae" McCormack, age 20, of South Boston, also died, latter the niece of U.S. Congressman John W. McCormack. A photo was published in the 11/30/1942 Boston Globe of her distraught mother leaving Southern Mortuary on Sunday after identification of her victim daughter with Mr. Edward J. "Knocko" McCormack, the father of Miss McCormack. Was single. Recalled online (in January 2010): "My dad's cousin, Ruth Knox...was there that night with Mary Ellen McCormack...Ruth was engaged to Mary Ellen's brother...I have been told that I resemble her..." Also (in March 2011): "I am the only one...in the family with reddish hair and I remember when I was a child all of the older people talking about Ruthie's red hair" (www3.gendisasters.com). Online response (in December 2013): "My Dad Eddie, 'Bubba' McCormack...had a relationship with Ruth. I don't know if they were actually engaged, but they were definitely boyfriend and girlfriend" (www3.gendisasters.com). Was raised by her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Knox (since remarried and widowed), at the address above, and late step-grandfather Mr. Timothy J. Nagle. Birth parents Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. and Catherine (Doherty) Knox. Joint funeral services with Miss McCormack were held the following Wednesday. Burial near Miss McCormack at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Companions were two of 22 Grove casualties interred at the above resting grounds (plus another eight at the attached Mount or "Old" Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, MA); the combined total of 30 fire victim burials was more than at any other single location.
