Age 31. 145 Homestead Street, Roxbury (Boston), MA (note the proximity to fire victims Mr. and Mrs. Earl and Evelyn Cohen, 141 Homestead Street, Roxbury. No other known connection). Born 11/17/1911, in Chelsea, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Bookkeeper, Julius Goldstein & Sons, Inc. (wholesale shoes), of Boston. At the club in a mixed foursome with her divorced boyfriend Albert "Avy" Rosenfarb, age 31, of Winthrop, MA, dead, his married younger sister Mrs. Betty Soroko, age 27 (Born 3/15/1915, Safed, Palestine. Group was standing at the elevated Caricature Bar to the Piedmont Street side of the main dining room waiting for the late show to begin. Mr. Soroko informed Boston Police on 12/01/1942 the relief rhumba band (led by Juan Pineda, age 38. Born 3/04/1904, in Calpe, Spain. Died 2/26/1998, age 93. Show Time," then a "flash of flame" appeared from the direction of the Melody Lounge. All walked east into the passageway leading to the New Lounge, which Mr. and Mrs. Soroko, self-described "Grove regulars," had explored just minutes earlier. The latter couple escaped safely out the two-door vestibule exit onto Broadway. Recalled in a 1967 interview by Mrs. Soroko: "My brother and his date were right behind us. People were saying, 'Don't panic...take it easy'" (The Boston Herald, 11/28/1967). Added: "We must have been the last ones out that door, because my brother had been right behind. But he never made it through after someone tripped." Mr. Soroko, in one of the first-known Grove fire retrospectives (UP interview, 11/27/1959): "...My wife's brother and his girlfriend died inside." Was single. Was one of 15 victims from the Roxbury "neighborhood" of Boston. Parents Mr. Barnard, same address, and the late Mrs. Sarah (Cantor) Shuman. Burial at Mount Lebanon (Shara Tifilo) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA.
