Companions Miss Sophia Antico, of Somerville, MA, and Miss Margaret "Peggy" Graham, of Roxbury (Boston), MA, both age 28, both perished. Miss Antico was a coworker at Schrafft's. Trio had listened to the afternoon broadcast of the B.C./Holy Cross college football upset over radio station WNAC Boston at the Antico home, then decided to attend the club. Her remains were transported to Southern Mortuary, Boston. "She is believed to have died by asphyxiation" (Malden Evening News, Malden, MA, 12/02/1942). Her mother reported theft from her body of some money, a bracelet, and two rings. "One was an engagement ring, with a large diamond...The other was...a family heirloom given her by her late father" (The Boston Post, 12/05/1942). "Her finger, police said, looked as though it had been injured by someone tearing off the ring" (The Boston Herald, 12/05/1942). Clothing, a purse, a wrist watch and a chain with a gold cross were later recovered at Southern Mortuary and at Police Headquarters. Jewelry and the watch had been incorrectly filed with the personal effects of another victim. "Although the daughter's handbag was found, with gloves and cosmetics still in it, a new wallet, containing an unknown sum of money and bearing her initials, was missing..." (The Boston Post, 12/05/1942). Was reported as engaged, unnamed fiancé was not present. Well-known Hub candy maker above was acquired by New York interests in 1967, operated in Charlestown until 1981. Parents Mrs. Jennie T. (Murphy) and stepfather Mr. Philip T. Cuthbert, same address.
