
Age 31. 229 Farrington Street, Wollaston (Quincy), MA. Born on 11/13/1911, in Methuen, MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Welder at George F. Lawley & Son shipyard, Neponset (Boston), MA. Was known as "Bob." His fiancée Miss Virginia "Ginnie" MacCurdy, age 27, of Quincy, also perished. Pair were at the club in a mixed-gender foursome with Lawrence "Larry" Ford and Miss J. Louise Sullivan, both age 27, both of Quincy, both dead. Couples were celebrating their respective engagements. One of 60 "probable identifications" listed by Boston City Hospital on Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary (all male). Was raised in Quincy. Prior to his civilian defense job was employed for a decade at Remick's retail store, Quincy (the same employer as his fiancée and also of Miss Sullivan), as a clerk in the clothing department, then in charge of shipping and stock rooms. "Widdop had been active as a bowler on the Remick company team" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 11/30/1942). Observed seven years later by the same paper: "The Quincy Center Bowling league...which now boasts 60 members, was started by Frank Walsh of Braintree [no Grove connection] and the late Bob Widdop of Quincy" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 3/07/1950). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. and Martha J. (Perry) Widdop, same address. Burial at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy. Touching in memoriam poem penned by Mrs. Ruth Osborne, a married older sister of his fiancée, published in the 12/11/1942 Quincy Patriot Ledger, begins: "Dear 'Bob,' our hearts are sad, our voices cannot speak. But silently we know that God, His watch will keep..." Also: "...And from that distant land, you'll hear a voice so dear. 'Tis 'little Ginnie' saying, 'I'm glad that you are here.'"
