Age 22. 1 Locust Park, Everett, MA. Born (as Patricia Gilbride Carey) on 5/20/1920, in Charlestown (Boston), MA. Died on 11/30/1942 (Monday), at 1:45 a.m., at Boston City Hospital, carbon monoxide poisoning, fracture of ribs, emphysema, smoke inhalation (death certificate). Switchboard operator, New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., Milk Street exchange, Boston. Was known as "Patricia Ann," also known as "Patsy." Was at the club with friend and coworker Miss Eileen Gavin, age 21 (Born 1/16/1921. Died as Eileen C. O'Connor on 3/03/2009, age 88. Last residence Carver, MA), of Roslindale (Boston), MA, survived. Was reported to have been, "...trapped in the fire before she had time to slip her coat from her shoulders after sitting down in the main room" (Malden Evening News, Malden, MA, 12/02/1942). Also: "Miss Eileen Gavin...was flung to safety by a sailor, but Miss Carey was carried away from the door by the pressing throng." Was the only Grove casualty recorded on their death certificate to have suffered possible broken ribs (survivor George Stubbs, of Bangor, ME, told the 11/30/1942 Bangor Daily News he witnessed a "young woman" become jammed against the casing of a Shawmut Street exit, her ribs giving way: "...those near her could hear as well as see." Not confirmed the same individual). Was a graduate of Winthrop, MA, High School in 1937. Was single. One of 81 fatalities (of 490 total) recorded as having perished after the actual fire date of November 28 (plus singer Ethel Bauer, age 32, who died on 12/01/1942, but was misrepresented as passing on "November 28"). Parents Mr. Thomas A., of Tewksbury, MA, and the late Mrs. Katherine A. "Rena" (Gilbride) Carey. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA.
