Age 26. 42 Clay Street, North Cambridge (Cambridge), MA. Born on 11/29/1915, in Cambridge. Died of burns (death certificate). Comptroller operator, Lever Bros. Co. (soap manufacturer), of Cambridge. With her escort Jacob "George" Herman, age 39, Brighton (Boston), MA, dead, had planned to visit the Chinatown district of Boston. Pair were waiting to meet another couple (unnamed) at the Grove when the fire occurred. Was single. Would have observed her 27th birthday on Sunday. Survived by a twin brother James (not present). First name was variously misspelled "Norine" (news accounts), "Noreene" (1930 federal census and era street listings), and "Noreen" ('40 federal census). Given name misspelled "Norinne" (with a single "r" and two "n"s) on the official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (correct spelling on her death certificate). One of 19 Grove fire victims from the city of Cambridge, tied with Worcester, MA, for the third-most deaths from any single municipality after Boston proper (147 victims) and Quincy, MA (24 dead). With Mr. Herman were two of 228 victims with death certificates showing "burns" as the primary cause of death, another 228 death certificates announced "carbon monoxide poisoning" as the main cause, eight more included both sources (an additional 26 gave other origins or stated simply "trapped in burning building"). The above soap company (known for its popular "Lifebuoy" and "Lux" brands) was based in Cambridge until a move to New York, NY, in 1959. Parents Mr. and Mrs. James D. and Julia M. (Brown) Curtin, same address. Burial at Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge. One of eight fire casualties interred at Cambridge Cemetery (also Patrick Courtney, age 25, John F. Doyle, age 25, Mrs. Lillian Geribo, age 26, Francis "Frank" Melvin, Jr., age 26, Miss Louise Morris, age 31, club porter Shadrack "Shady" Plenty, age 54, and James Slattery, Sr., age 42). In memoriam notice was published upon the first anniversary of her death, in the 11/28/1943 Boston Globe (first name was spelled correctly).
