Age 20. 39 Worley Street, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. Born April 1922, in Sydney, N.S., Canada. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Hygienist in the office of a Roslindale (Boston), MA, dentist. Companion (or companions) at the club unknown. Her remains were identified at Southern Mortuary, Boston. Reported in the 12/03/1942 Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, N.S., as one of, "...at least three former residents of Cape Breton [who] lost their lives in the Cocoanut Grove Night Club fire in Boston Saturday night" (also victims Miss Helen Brough, age 32, and Mrs. Jessie McKee, age 39). "Relatives from Canada were among the mourners" (Parkway Transcript, Roslindale, 12/03/1942). To the U.S. in 1925. Was a graduate of Roslindale High School, Boston, 1939 (classmate of survivor Miss Eileen Gavin, age 21, of Roslindale, no other known connection). High school nickname was "Pudgy." Graduate of Columbia University, dental hygiene school. Better times: "Miss Norma MacDonald of 39 Worley st....returned home by plane following a visit to her sister in Cleveland. She made a tour of the Great Lakes" (The Boston Evening Globe, 8/29/1938). Was single. One of 28 persons age 17 or younger known present at the club when the blaze broke (14 dead, 14 survived). One of 61 minors (then under age 21) claimed in the disaster (of 490 total victims). One of 228 casualties with death certificates showing "carbon monoxide poisoning" as the primary cause of death, another 228 (exact) declared "burns" as the main reason (eight more included both sources, while an additional 26 gave other origins or stated simply "trapped in burning building"). Parents Mrs. Emma (Alford), same address, and the late Mr. Alexander A. "Sandy" MacDonald. Burial at Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA. Was one of two Grove victims interred at Forest Hills Cemetery (also patron Charles Capone, Jr., age 25).
