The Boston Herald, 1/05/1943: "The family of the late Monte [sic] Shanker...reported that his 21-jewel watch was missing. Since that time, the watch was found to have been in a repair shop, not in possession of the owner at the time of the blaze." Was raised in Dorchester. Was single. First name was misspelled "Monte" (with an "e" at the end) in some news accounts, on his death certificate and on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties. Medium build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 10," 160 lbs.). With his victim sister was one of 16 pairs of siblings both lost in the blaze (also half-siblings Earl Tattrie and Mrs. Harrilyn "Dolly" Taft, ages 31 and 21, and the Fitzgerald brothers of Wilmington, MA, four brothers dead). With Mrs. Resnick and her husband were three of 38 Grove deaths from the Dorchester "neighborhood" of Boston, twice as many as from any other Hub district (Brighton was next with 19 dead). Was one of 107 single male patron victims (also 101 married, 20 engaged, 5 divorced and 4 widowed male guests died, a total of 237 male customers deceased out of 256 male casualties overall). Parents Mrs. Dora (White), same address, and the late Mr. Joseph Shanker. Burial with his victim sister and her husband in the Shanker family lot at Mount Lebanon (Lord Rothschild) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA (first name spelled "Monty" on his stone).
