O'Sullivan
Mary Rose O'Sullivan
(1917 - 1942)

Age 25. 58 Brookline Avenue, Holyoke, MA. Born 6/26/1917, in Holyoke. Died of burns (death certificate). Stenographer, Westinghouse Electric and Mfg. Co., Springfield, MA. Was known as "Mary Rose." At the club with her companion and coworker Conrad Schorling, age 26, of Springfield, dead, also John Lightcap, age 22 (Born 4/19/1920. Died 6/29/1994, age 74. Last residence Springfield), of East Longmeadow, MA, and the latter's date Miss Mary McCarthy, age 25 (Born 8/30/1917. Died as Mary G. Lightcap on 3/30/1965, age 46. Last residence East Longmeadow, MA), of Springfield, both survived. Foursome traveled across Massachusetts to attend the afternoon B.C. Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders college football contest at Fenway Park. Were preparing to leave the club when fire broke. With Mr. Schorling, "...danced with death when they swung into a few final turns on the dance floor..." (Springfield Daily News, 11/30/1942). Other couple was waiting in the main foyer, safely escaped. An alternate account appeared in her hometown newspaper: "Contrary to previous reports, Miss O'Sullivan and Mr. Schorling...did not remain for another dance. Miss O'Sullivan was returning from the ladies' room when the panic broke out" (Holyoke Daily Transcript and Telegram, Holyoke, MA, 11/30/1942). Spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trial testimony by Miss McCarthy seems to dismiss the latter version (quote): "...Miss O'Sullivan and Mr. Schorling said they would like to have one more dance, so Mr. Lightcap and I were waiting by the door for them. Five minutes later I saw flames coming from the Melody Lounge stairs..." (The Boston Globe, 3/30/1943). Her mother left Holyoke on Sunday for Boston, located daughter's remains late Sunday afternoon at Mass General Hospital. "Relatives...said that her facial features were recognizable and that while the girl had been badly crushed and apparently died by suffocation, it was not necessary to use any other means of identification" (Holyoke Daily Transcript and Telegram, 11/30/1942). Mother was informed by officials her daughter was already deceased upon arrival at the hospital. Was a graduate of Holyoke High School in 1934. Was a member of the local Catholic Girls' Junior League (Springfield Union, 11/30/1942: "Her team...stands first in the organization's bowling league"). Was single. One of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47. Parents Holyoke Police Sergeant Thomas and Mrs. Bridget (Hoar) O'Sullivan, same address. Burial at St. Jerome's Cemetery, Holyoke.
