
Age 20. 40 Lincoln Parkway, Somerville, MA. Born 2/16/1922, in Cambridge, MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Employed at Wheaton Shoe Co., of Cambridge. Was known as "Betty." In a trio with her boyfriend Francis "Frank" Melvin, age 26, and Patrick Courtney, age 25, both of Cambridge, all dead. Former was to enter U.S. Army training on the coming Tuesday. With Mr. Courtney was diverting Mr. Melvin to the Grove while a surprise farewell party for the latter was set up at the Melvin home. Telephoned her mother from the club, "...to let her know where she was - only an hour before the holocaust..." (Boston Daily Record, 12/04/1942). Her remains were identified at Southern Mortuary, Boston. Was raised in Cambridge. Was single. Was one of 61 minors (then under age 21) to perish, also one of 234 females killed, along with 256 males (the latter count including two outside passing rescue workers), a total of 490 dead overall. Was one of 228 victims showing "carbon monoxide" as the primary cause of death on their death certificates, another 228 (exact) were recorded dead from "burns" (eight more were listed with both causes). One of eight residents lost from the nearby city of Somerville (also Mrs. Rose Bean, age 18, Miss Sophia Antico, age 28, Miss Marjorie Currier, age 39, Joseph Fortunati, age 28, Howard Johnson, age 31, club bartender Vincent Preziuso, Jr., age 22, and Sica "Sam" Wyner, age 28). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. and Mary E. (McGonagle) Keefe, same address. Burial at St. Paul's Cemetery, Arlington, MA. Was one of three Grove casualties interred at St. Paul's Cemetery (also Miss Grace Evelyn Brown, age 25, and James "Ekky" Watson, age 32, both patrons).
