
Age 21. 42 Vine Street, Winchester, MA. Born 1/23/1921, in Winchester. Died of burns (death certificate). Teaching substitute, employed at Lincoln Elementary School in Winchester for the past two months. Was at the club with fellow Winchester school teacher Miss Helen M. Welch, age 21, dead, Lieut. John Stapleton, Jr., U.S. Army, age 25, of Foley, AL, dead, and Capt. Charles Whitmire, U.S. Army, age 23 (Born 7/02/1919. Died 11/25/2003, of Arlington, VA, age 84), Greenville, SC, injured. Foursome attended the afternoon 28-point-underdog Holy Cross football upset of nationally top-ranked Boston College at Fenway Park. Group had been seated at a cellar Melody Lounge table near the foot of the Piedmont Street stairs, "about two tables in." Became trapped by flames with Miss Welch in the main level foyer ladies room as they prepared to leave. "One of the army officers is alive...and was able to tell the story" (Woburn Daily Times, Woburn, MA, 11/30/1942). Was a graduate of Winchester High School in 1938, "...playing on the field hockey team and being manager of the unbeaten girls' varsity basketball team" (Winchester Star, 12/04/1942). Was a graduate (with Miss Welch) of Lowell State Teachers College, Lowell, MA, in 1942. Older brother Harold F. (not present), senior administrative assistant to the U.S. Postmaster General in Washington, DC, traveled to Boston, "...over the week-end because of the illness of his mother" (The Evening Star, Washington, DC, 11/30/1942), was greeted with news of his sister's tragic demise upon arrival. With Miss Welch were two of nine Grove victims from the ill-fated Hub suburb of Winchester. Parents Mrs. Honora "Nora" A. (Lucey), same address, and the late Mr. Michael C. Ambrose. Burial in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. With Miss Welch were two of five fire casualties interred at the above resting grounds (also patrons Joseph Dineen, age 23, Miss G. Virginia McLaughlin, age 19, William Young, Jr., age 36). Middle name Lucey.
