
Age 19. 32 Elm Street, Rockville (Vernon), CT. Born 1/01/1923, in Providence, RI. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Sophomore at Emerson College, Boston. Attended the big season-ending afternoon B.C./Holy Cross college football game at Fenway Park in a party of eight, four of whom (unnamed) left the club shortly after 10 o'clock. The remaining four included her Emerson roommate Miss Jane Peavey, age 20, of Fort Devens (Ayer), MA, also Osborne Rainer, Jr., age 18, M.I.T. junior, and Pvt. Albert "Clyde" Sullivan, U.S. Army, age 22, the latter two friends from Montgomery, AL, all dead. Her remains were identified on Sunday at Southern Mortuary by a representative from Emerson College. "Though the girl was said to have been burned beyond recognition, a Rockville high school class ring and a piece of a dress served as identification" (Springfield Daily News, Springfield, MA, 11/30/1942). Was a graduate of Rockville, CT, High School in 1941. Was single. Surname was misspelled "Playden" (with an "e" on the second syllable) on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (surname spelling was correct on her death certificate). Was the youngest of four fire victims from the Nutmeg State (also Miss Ruth Reid, age 28, Mrs. Margaret Sullivan, age 56, and the adult son of the latter, Raymond Sullivan, age 34). With her companions were four of 464 club guests killed in addition to 26 non-patrons deceased (includes 17 employees, 6 visiting entertainers, one War Bonds salesgirl, also two outside passing fire rescuers), a total of 490 dead.
