Marie Louise Hollander
(1921 - 1942)

Age 21. 100 Grove Avenue, Flourtown, PA. Born on 4/23/1921, in Scarsdale, NY. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Occupation: "at home" (death certificate). Known as "Marie Louise." Was present for dinner with her fiancé Lieut. Charles Fauci, Jr., U.S. Coast Guard, age 21, of Wellesley Hills (Wellesley), MA, dead. The latter was to report for duty the following Monday. "He and a young lady had driven in to the night club and it is believed that the young lady also perished" (The Townsman, Wellesley, MA, 12/03/1942). Had arrived in Boston after visiting with her father earlier the same day in Pennsylvania. Her father on Sunday, "...was informed by Boston police in the afternoon that a pocketbook with his daughter's name...had been found at the scene" (Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/30/1942). "Her badly burned body, one of many lying...at a temporary morgue across the street from the ruined night club, was identified by her father..." (North Penn Reporter, Lansdale, PA, 12/01/1942). "She was burned beyond recognition in the fire and was not identified until her father and brother arrived from Philadelphia..." (Stamford Advocate, Stamford, CT, 12/05/1942). Her remains were removed to Southern Mortuary, Boston. For the past decade had resided in Boston with her separated mother and a sister. Moved to Pennsylvania to live with her father upon the death of her mother one year prior. Had formerly attended Smith College. Couple planned to marry in January. As a child was featured in the advertising of Hub clothier, L. P. Hollander & Co., founded by her paternal grandfather (ad photo caption, at age 7, The Palm Beach Post, West Palm Beach, FL, 1/31/1929: "This little lady...is a real water sprite, and has not only learned to dive, but knows most of the strokes"). Made news with Mr. Fauci in July 1938 when they narrowly escaped injury after their open motorboat exploded off the Gloucester, MA, coast. One of seven Keystone State victims, tied (with Alabama) as fourth-most from any state after Massachusetts (406), New York (15) and New Hampshire (9). Parents Mr. Sumner R., same address, and the late Mrs. Ethel (Vaughan) Hollander. Interment of her cremated remains in the family plot at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA.
