Age 31. 17 Crawford Street, Roxbury (Boston), MA. Born 11/12/1911, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Died 12/01/1942 (Tuesday), at Boston City Hospital, of burns (death certificate). Salesman for Monogram Pictures, Inc., Hollywood, CA (local office: 39 Church Street, Boston). Also a film booker for Liberty Theatres, Inc., of Springfield, MA (western Bay State cinema chain owned by fire survivor Herman Rifkin, age 58), and manager of the Kenmore Theatre, in Boston. Known as "Larry." Attended a party of 29 to honor cowboy actor Charles "Buck" Jones at multiple tables on the prestigious main dining room raised rear terrace, 16 dead. "A trained theater man, Mr. Stone pleaded with the hysterical crowd not to jam the doors when the fire first broke out" (Springfield Republican, 12/04/1942). "Lawrence Stone...died a hero's death, for twice he had led women out of the burning building through a downstairs back exit and returned a third time in a futile attempt to rescue others" (Springfield Republican, 11/30/1942). Early news reports indicated a "Mrs. Lawrence Stone" also perished in the blaze. "The reported death...is erroneous, as the Monogram booker and salesman...is declared to have been single" (Motion Picture Daily, New York, NY, 12/02/1942). From Canada to the U.S. in 1934. Was single. Made his home (address above) with brothers Morris "Murray" and Samuel, neither present. Future wife of the latter (the former Ruth L. Rosenbloom) revealed decades later that she was informed Mr. Stone stood on the top of a table to help calm the crowd, also that following the blaze her husband-to-be received his late brother's car, "...a large and fancy convertible" (interview with this writer). Was good-sized (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11," 205 lbs.). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Louis and Eva (Lazarus) Stone. Burial at Mount Lebanon (Independent Pride of Boston) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA (stone incorrectly displays his age at death as "29 years").
