Age 23. 54 Washington Street, Charlestown (Boston), MA. Born on 2/17/1919, Somerville, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Office worker, R. H. White Co. (department store), Boston. Was in a group of five (unnamed) girls who had just stepped inside the main Piedmont Street entrance and decided not to stay because the club was too crowded. The Boston Post, 12/01/1942: "They had not even taken their outer wraps off when the fire-inspired panic struck." Two of the party were reported dead, three reached safety (note similarity to the partially-identified all-female party including victim Miss Dorothy Haggett, age 28). Was the lone Grove victim removed from the scene to Malden Hospital, Malden, MA. Her remains were identified the following Monday at Northern Mortuary, Boston. "Identification was made through dental examinations" (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942). Was raised in Charlestown. Was single. First name was misreported as "Katherine" on her death certificate (correct first name on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties). Was one of three employees lost from the above well-known Boston retailer (also unwed sisters Rose and Sally Summer, ages 35 and 33). One of five Grove victims from the Hub "neighborhood" of Charlestown (also James Kelley, age 25, Timothy Joseph McCarthy, age 38, Miss Gwendolyn Snively, age 17, and Joseph Sullivan, age 27). Parents Mrs. Margaret (Clafferty), same address, and the late Mr. William McLaughlin. The Boston Evening Globe, 12/04/1942: "The funeral...was held this morning from her residence. The funeral was scheduled originally for yesterday [Thursday] and was postponed for the arrival of her brother...from Texas." Burial at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA.
