(1921 - 1942)

Age 21. 36 Highland Avenue, Cambridge, MA. Born 3/15/1921, in Providence, RI. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Gave up his defense job at the Watertown Arsenal, Watertown, MA, to enter the U.S. Army the coming Monday. To the Grove by cab about quarter to ten for a farewell outing with his fiancée Miss Joyce Spector, age 18 (Born 4/16/1924. Died as Joyce Mekelburg on 4/18/2024, age 100), of Boston, survived. Miss Spector to a reporter (from her bed): "We played gin-rummy here at home until 9:30. It had cleared off so nice after the rain and he said, 'Let's get a breath of fresh air and have a dance'" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Twosome were seated at a table adjacent the northwest corner of the cellar Melody Lounge where a small light bulb was unscrewed by a patron. Miss Spector to Boston Police, 12/01/1942: "The waiter came over with a match...and turned the bulb on again and the light was on and he was still holding the match...I kept watching him very closely...and the bulb was in already and everybody breathed a sigh of relief and then we saw it, Justin and I saw the palm tree immediately catch fire..." Ordered his fiancée to leave then stayed to fight the blaze. "Boston police found Morgan's body in the ruins..." (Providence Journal, 12/01/1942). Miss Spector (quote): "He's such a wonderful fellow and just anything we did together was fun" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Was raised in Providence. To Cambridge 18 months prior. Graduate of Rindge Technical School, Cambridge. Previously a clerk at the business of an uncle, Huron Drug Co., in Cambridge. Had started a course at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. At 5' 6," 128 lbs. (WWII draft registration, February '42) ranked among the smallest of male fire victims. Recalled by the former Miss Spector (as Mrs. Joyce Mekelburg) in 2017 at 75th anniversary on-site fire observations, at age 93: "I was going to marry this man. We were happy, we were sitting there and laughing" (The Boston Globe, 11/25/2017). His fiancée at her April 2024 death (two days after turning age 100) was the last-known living female Grove fire survivor and the second-last living Grove survivor overall (after final survivor Robert "Bob" Shumway. Born on 2/20/1924. Died on 6/25/2025, age 101). Parents Mr. Robert A., same address, and the late Mrs. Estelle M. (Bedrick) Morgan. Burial at Fuller Street (Cambridge) Cemetery, Everett, MA. Middle name Charles.
