Joseph Shaktman

Age 43. 21 Nelson Road, Peabody, MA. Born on 8/07/1899, in Uman, Russia. Died 11/29/1942 (Sunday), of burns, at Mass General Hospital (death certificate). Proprietor, Shaktman Embossing Co. (leather goods), 12 Hanson Street, Salem, MA. Witnessed the season-ending B.C./Holy Cross college football game at Fenway Park with his wife Mollie, age 42, dead, in a party including his married younger brother David, age 40 (Born 7/27/1902. Died 2/04/1951, age 48), latter not present at the blaze. "David Shaktman came home to Peabody immediately following the game, declining the invitation of his brother to attend the night club, due to illness at his home" (Salem Evening News, 12/01/1942). Case #33 of 39 in a landmark 1943 Mass General Hospital Grove burns study (no history obtained. Arrival: "Very poor, required oxygen." Burns: 2nd and 3rd-degree, face, hands, chest, back, abdomen, legs. Severe inhalation burns. Total 50% of body. Died after 13 hours). Cheated an oddly similar fate in Salem two years prior when he was caught in flames at his three-story wooden leather shop: "Joseph Shaktman, owner of the building, was working on the second floor when his wife, accompanied by their 3-year-old son, came to bring lunch to him" (The Boston Evening Globe, 3/12/1940). Also: "The blaze trapped the three...Shaktman and his wife jumped to safety, while...an employee...carried the boy down the stairs to the street." To the U.S. in 1907. Was a graduate of Peabody schools. Survived by a daughter Roslyn, age 18, and the above son Lewis, now age 5. Was an air raid warden in Salem. Surname (with his wife) was misspelled "Shacktman" (with an inserted "c") on the final official November 1943 Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (correct surname spelling on their death certificates). Was the first of eight dead (out of 39 cases overall) in the above historic Mass General Grove burns study, published in June 1943. Full build (WWII draft registration, February '42: 5' 11," 189 lbs.). With his wife were the lone victims from the city of Peabody. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Moses and Lizzie (Schneiderman) Shaktman. Burial with his wife at Peabody Jewish (Maple Hill) Cemeteries, Peabody.
