Wife had planned to meet her husband at the club, but had not yet arrived when the fire started. One of 60 "probable identifications" inventoried Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) by Boston City Hospital at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Was a graduate of Southern Junior High School, Somerville. Married in 1935. Couple had no children. A photograph of his distraught mother as she was informed of the loss of her victim son was published in the 11/30/1942 Boston Globe (caption: "Mrs. Margaret Fortunati, of Somerville...breaks down as she learns the fate of her husband [sic]..."). The portrait shown here (from family archives) was taken just two weeks before his death. Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11," 155 lbs.). Was one of 256 males killed (includes two outside passing rescue workers) along with 234 women (a total of 490 dead). One of eight victims from the city of Somerville (also Miss Sophia Antico, age 28, Mrs. Rose Bean, age 18, Miss Marjorie Currier, age 39, Howard Johnson, age 31, Miss Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Keefe, age 20, club bartender Vincent Preziuso, Jr., age 22, and Sica "Sam" Wyner, age 28). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Secundo and Margarita (Gonella) Fortunati. Burial at North Cambridge Catholic Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. Widow was interred at his side upon her August 1975 passing.
