Known as "Joe." Was present in a trio including fellow Tufts College graduates William Meserve, of Washington, DC (previously of Winchester), and Norman Paré, of Medford, MA, both age 25, both dead. Was to enter the U.S. Army at Fort Wayne, IN, the coming Monday. "Because of his work as a mechanical engineer he was deferred from the draft, but waived deferment to enter the service" (Winchester Star, Winchester, 12/04/1942). A potential fourth party member, former Tufts classmate S. James Occhipinti, U.S. Army, age 24 (Born 4/06/1918. Died 3/28/2004, age 85. Last residence Clarksburg, MD), of Medford, departed late from Camp Devens and stayed home. Quincy Patriot Ledger, 11/30/1942: "Both Paré and Dineen...were acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Donald MacMillan [both victims]...and are believed to have been in their party at the Cocoanut Grove" (early report appears to be incorrect). One of 60 "probable identifications" listed Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Was a graduate of Winchester High School in 1936. Graduate of Tufts College, Engineering School, 1940. "He was an outstanding baseball player, having played in high school and college and with several professional teams" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Was slender (WWII draft registration, October '40: 6' 0," 175 lbs.). With Mr. Meserve were two of nine Grove victims from the ill-fated suburb of Winchester (also Miss Marion Ambrose, age 21, Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Gladys Charles, ages 27 and 29, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, Jr., and Pauline Saunders, ages 27 and 28, Miss Helen M. Welch, age 21, and Miss Katherine Woods, age 22, all patrons). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. and Elizabeth (McNamara) Dineen, same address. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. Middle name Daniel.
