Lathe hand in the electrical department, Whitin Machine Works, of Whitinsville. Known as Joe. In a party of six with John Bagley, age 21, and Albert Belanger, age 29, both of Whitinsville, also Mr. and Mrs. James and Mary J. Duggan, ages 24 and 26 respectively, of Waltham, MA, and William Trainor, age 22, of Uxbridge, MA. Mr. Belanger (Born 11/09/1913. Died 5/27/1974, age 60. Last residence Whitinsville) and Mr. Duggan (Born 9/16/1918. Died 1/10/2009, age 90. Last residence Laguna Niguel, CA) were the lone two party survivors. Group had attended the big afternoon B.C./Holy Cross football game at Fenway Park in Boston. Was previously a star halfback on the 1941 Holy Cross Crusaders football team (WWII draft registration, July '41: 5' 11," 195 lbs.). "He spent Friday...among his former college associates and the familiar surroundings of Fitton Field, giving assistance in the final practice before the Boston College game" (Worcester Telegram, Worcester, MA, 11/30/1942). Also: "His evening meal Friday was with the coaching staff at the college." Rescue worker Miss Nina Underwood (Born 2/06/1924. Died as Nina J. Young on 6/27/1997, Westminster, CA, age 73) to The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942: "I took two young men from Holy Cross to the hospital, and a friend of mine told me later that one of them was Joe Boratyn..." Reported by Rocco Canale, Boston College football captain (not present): "A fellow named Joe Boratyn, who was...on the Holy Cross team the year before, told the head waiter he knew our gang and would he mind if he held our table until we arrived" (The Greensboro Record, Greensboro, NC, 6/11/1943). One of 60 "probable identifications" listed Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Was single. Was a graduate of Northbridge High School, where he and Mr. Duggan were gridiron teammates. Graduated the College of the Holy Cross in 1942. "Doctors said a Holy Cross ring was found on his hand and several football pictures were found in his wallet" (AP wire article, 11/30/1942). Enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps the past April. Offered a contract with the NFL Chicago Bears but declined because of pending military service. Was best man at the Duggans' wedding the previous September. One of two Holy Cross alumni to perish (also patron Timothy Feeny, age 34). Parents Mrs. Mary B. (Ilczyszyn), same address, and the late Mr. Jacob Boratyn. Burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Whitinsville. Middle name Anthony.
