Ensign, U.S. Naval Reserve, attending Naval Training School (Communications), at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Arrived at the club by taxi at 10 o'clock with his Harvard naval roommates John Bauer, age 27, of Pittsburgh, PA, dead, A. Perry Gordy, age 30, of Columbus, GA, and L. Eugene Jessup, age 27, of Atlanta, GA (the latter two survived), all ensigns at the U.S. Navy communications school. Foursome entered via the new Broadway Lounge, walked through the connecting passageway to the main dining room then to the Piedmont Street lobby. Ensign Gordy (letter to the Sunday Ledger-Enquirer, Columbus, GA, 12/06/1942): "After checking our hats and overcoats Albritton and Bauer saw some friends and John Albritton remarked they would go over and speak to them. The four he knew were located near the ballroom floor..." Was last observed by Ensign Gordy talking with the above foursome. Came to Harvard the previous July. "At the time...he was sales and advertising manager of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Montgomery" (The TuscaloosaNews, Tuscaloosa, AL, 11/30/1942). Graduate of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL. Wife former Jean N. Bellingrath (Born 10/27/1916. Died as Jean B. Lane on 11/02/1994, age 78), married in 1938, in Montgomery, AL. Wife telephoned the quarters occupied by her husband on Sunday: "Receiving evasive answers she...finally was connected with the medical officer who told her that Ensign Albritton was one of the victims" (The Montgomery Advertiser, 11/30/1942). Widow made news when she saw her husband's cap pictured in the 12/14/1942 edition of Life magazine and contacted Boston Police. "She was sure that it was his, for the hat in the picture was tipped and inside of it she could read his [hat check] number, 231" (International News Service wire article, 4/05/1943). The cap had since been claimed in error by another woman, who then returned it to the Navy: "She had a receipt to show for the transaction, but the hat was never recovered" (INS wire article, 4/05/1943). Survived by a son John, Jr., age 3, and baby daughter Jean, age 5 months. Had a twin brother Jessie (not present). Was tall and thin (WWII draft registration, October '40: 6' 2," 160 lbs.). Parents Mrs. Mary "Annie" (Norman) and the late Judge E. T. Albritton. Father was formerly an Alabama State Supreme Court justice. Burial at Oakwood Cemetery, Montgomery, AL. Middle name Norman.
