Age 34. 40 Washington Elms, Cambridge, MA. Born 5/14/1908, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Machinist, General Electric Co., Everett, MA, plant. Was in a mixed-gender foursome with his wife Josephine, age 29, her married younger sister Mrs. Helen Cafarella, age 26, and the latter's husband Felix, age 28, of Waltham, MA, all dead. "The two couples had attended the Boston College-Holy Cross game and were at the Grove for the evening" (Brockton Daily Enterprise, Brockton, MA, 11/30/1942). His remains were transported to Southern Mortuary, Boston. Was raised in Cambridge. Married in 1936. Was living with his wife in Brockton, MA, as of the 1940 federal census ("auto mechanic, garage"). Wife was the registrar on record in Brockton for his October '40 WWII draft registration (obvious physical characteristics: "scar on the right side of neck"). The couple had recently relocated from Brockton to his native Cambridge. Full build (WWII draft registration: 5' 11," 190 lbs.). One of 256 males killed in the tragedy (including two outside passing rescue workers, Harold Hawkins, age 46, and Stanley Viator, age 25), along with 234 women (for a total of 490 dead). With his wife and their party companions were two of 56 married couples present in which both partners lost their lives. With the others were four of 464 club guests taken in addition to 26 non-patrons deceased (including 17 employees, 6 visiting entertainers, one War Bonds salesgirl, also the two outside passing fire rescuers). Parents Mr. and Mrs. John and Vincentia (Domaika) Powell. Burial with his wife at Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Middle name Joseph.
