Age 34. 77 Burnap Street, Wilmington, MA (also 48 Stonehurst Street, Dorchester, MA). Born 2/28/1908, in Boston. Died of burns (death certificate). Corporal, U.S. Army, based at 6th Army Corps Headquarters, Providence, RI. Unidentified remains were briefly detailed on an early published Grove casualty list: "'J.H.D. [sic],' Corp., (initials on ring) 6th Army Corps, Providence, R.I." (Boston Evening American, 11/30/1942). Was one of 60 "probable identifications" inventoried Sunday morning at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Identity of his remains were confirmed on Monday. His family resided at the Dorchester (Boston) address above, but maintained a summer home at Wilmington (the first address above) for 20 years. During the past two years they lived at the latter permanently (both addresses were shown on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of dead). Army enlistment the past August 8. Was previously an assistant manager and stenographer, Boston City Municipal Court ('42 street listings). "Sergt. [sic] Quinlan was known throughout the section as an able singer and pianist" (Lowell Sun, Lowell, MA, 11/30/1942). Was single. Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: Boston. 5' 11," 148 lbs.). Was the lone Grove victim (of five) from the small Middlesex County town of Wilmington not connected with the ill-fated Fitzgerald family (four brothers died, including the guest of honor Pvt. Henry Fitzgerald, U.S. Army Air Corps, age 30). One of 18 active Army personnel killed (out of a total of 58 U.S. military personnel lost from all branches). Parents Mr. and Mrs. John H. and Katherine T. (Cleary) Quinlan, same Wilmington address. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. Middle name Henry.
