Attached to Battery E. 605th Coast Artillery, Charlestown (Boston), MA (same outfit as victim Lieut. John Stapleton, Jr., U.S. Army, age 25, no other known connection). His father in Buffalo telephoned his Hub military base upon learning news of the blaze on Sunday and was informed that his son had not reported back to his post. Father left for Boston with his wife and a daughter, identified the remains of his victim son on Monday. "Lieutenant Guggenheimer was so severely burned that his father was able to establish identification only by the bridgework of his teeth" (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942). "Notification of the promotion of second Lieutenant John Guggenheimer of Buffalo to first lieutenant...was received today [Monday]...two days after his death in the Cocoanut Grove night club fire in Boston" (The Times Union, Albany, NY, 12/01/1942). Was a graduate of Cornell University in 1937. Degree from Harvard Business School, 1938. Army enlistment on 10/14/1940. Was previously an assistant efficiency engineer, Barmon Bros. Co., Inc. (clothing manufacturers), of Buffalo. Was a lifelong Buffalo resident. Was single. Attached to the New York State National Guard, was also a Buffalo-area Boy Scout scoutmaster. "He...was recognized as an outstanding wood craftsman" (Buffalo Courier-Express, 12/01/1942). One of 228 fire victims showing "burns" as the primary cause of death on their death certificates, the same count (exact) as those pronounced dead by "carbon monoxide poisoning" (another eight were listed with both causes). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Milton C. and Beslah L. "Bessie" (Levi) Guggenheimer, same address. Burial at Forest Lawn (cemetery), Buffalo, NY.
