Last residence Brookline, MA), older brother of Grove owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (Born 11/22/1897. Died 1/27/1947, heart failure, age 49. Last residence Brighton). Was a substitute bartender at the club, "...for a few weeks" (Arlington Advocate, 12/03/1942). Was known by his middle name Bruno. First name John. "He was asked to go to the Cocoanut Grove after his work at the [Circle] Lounge, to assist" (Worcester Telegram, Worcester, MA, 11/30/1942). One of five Grove bartenders on duty to perish (also Martin "Marty" Breen, age 41, Paul Mikalonis "Mitchell," age 27, Vincent Preziuso, age 22, and William "Bubbles" Shea, age 34), five others survived. An older brother James "Geno," age 31 (Born 8/21/1911. Died on 7/04/1996, age 84. Last residence Woburn, MA), a patron, safely escaped. Both brothers were younger siblings of Mrs. F. Frances (Marchi) Cecchini, not present, wife of club waiter Adolph "Chico" Cecchini, age 45 (Born 7/15/1897, Lucca, Italy. Died 7/27/1993, age 96), survived. Wife former S. Eleanor DeMatteis, age 23 (Born 2/26/1919. Died as Eleanor S. Stephens on 10/25/2005, age 86), married in 1940, was not present. Survived by infant sons John, Jr., age 2, and George, age 10 months. Modest frame (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 7," 150 lbs.). One of three fire victims from the Bay State town of Arlington (also patrons Miss Shirley Anderson, age 19, and Miss Laura Ryan, age 42). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Mary (Passerotti) Marchi. Burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
