Age 46. 1412 Beacon Street, Waban (Newton), MA. Born on 6/13/1896, Brookline, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). President, John A. Hope, Inc., Charlestown (Boston), MA, real estate. His wife Kathryn V., age 46 (Born 8/10/1896. Died 3/06/1976, in Framingham, MA, age 79. Never remarried), was reported as injured but not hospitalized. His remains were identified at Northern Mortuary, Boston. Death of the prominent Hub sales broker was observed in the 12/01/1942 New York Times: "He was an expert on commercial and business properties..." The Boston Post, 12/09/1942: "It developed...that John Hope, an insurance broker who lost his life in the fire, had previously handled the fire insurance for Cocoanut Grove..." Was reported no longer in business with the club at the time of the blaze. Was raised in Brookline. Was a graduate of Boston University and of the Harvard School of Business Administration. Veteran of the first World War. Married in 1920. Director at the Charlestown Five Cents Savings Bank, Charlestown. President of the Boston Board of Realtors. Survived by daughters Mary, age 19, and Jacqueline, age 16, also a son James, age 13. Robust build (WWII draft registration, April '42: 5' 10½," 200 lbs.). Was one of 14 fire victims from the Hub suburb of Newton, the sixth-most Grove casualties from any single community after Boston, Quincy, Cambridge, Worcester and Brookline, MA. One of two dead from the Newton "village" of Waban (also patron Philip Seletsky, age 39). With his wife was one of 25 married couples present where one member perished while the other survived. Parents Mr. and Mrs. James L. and Mary E. (Fenton) Hope. Burial at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. One of three Grove victims buried at Holyhood Cemetery (also George Colburn, age 32, and Rodric Prendergast, age 18, both patrons). Middle name Alfred.
