Was in a party of six with his wife Catherine, age 29, dead, Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Eleanor Coleman, both age 26, both dead, Henry Gaw, age 30 (Born 11/26/1912. Died 8/01/2002, age 89), and his girlfriend Miss Loretta Russell, age 28 (Born 12/07/1913. Died as Loretta I. Gaw on 5/23/1990, age 76), both injured, all from the Worcester County community of Clinton. Group came to Boston to attend the big B.C. Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders college football game at Fenway Park. Made reservations at the nearby Latin Quarter club, but their table was given to someone else. Attempted to enter a half-dozen other establishments before arrving at the Grove. Recalled decades later by Mr. Gaw that the party was seated on the coveted main dining room raised rear terrace after Mr. Coleman slipped the headwaiter (quote), "...a pretty good tip" (Worcester Telegram, Worcester, MA, 11/22/1992). Had engaged rooms at the nearby Copley-Plaza Hotel, "...rooms they were never to occupy..." (The Evening Gazette, Worcester, 11/30/1942). Married on 1/04/1942, in Clinton. U.S. Navy enlistment the past May. "He was prominent in Republican party circles and several years ago was a candidate for the board of assessors" (Clinton Daily Item, 11/30/1942). Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 10," 135 lbs.). Party survivors Mr. Gaw and Miss Russell later married in 1946. Parents Mrs. Bridget A. (Mortimer) and the late Mr. Martin J. Salmon. Burial with his wife at St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster, MA (the above cemetery was located in Clinton until it was moved over the town line for the creation of Wachusett Reservoir in 1901). Middle name Joseph. Surname (with his wife) pronounced "SAL-mon."
