Guy (Howard)
Howard A. Guy (Howard)
(1905 - 1942)

Age 37. 174 West 81st Street, New York, NY. Born 9/11/1905, in Cleveland, OH. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Visiting relief solo pianist in the cellar Melody Lounge. Professional name "Guy Howard." Was off between sets when fire broke. Grove patron and survivor George Hayes, age 44 (Born 2/21/1898. Died 12/31/1958, age 60), of Quincy, MA, at the city inquests: "We came upstairs...when the piano player that was playing down in Melody Lounge earlier...came running through the lobby...and he was hollering, 'Take it easy, keep quiet,' and I thought it was a fight..." (inquest transcript, 12/02/1942). His parents in Ohio received a telegram on Monday from the Bradford Hotel, Boston, where he lodged: "Regret to inform you that your son was a victim of the Cocoanut Grove fire. Sympathy" (Mansfield News-Journal, Mansfield, OH, 11/30/1942). Had earlier sent his mother a letter which said he would be at an unnamed Hub night club "for a month." Appeared on the club entertainment payroll starting November 7. Was raised in Mansfield, OH. Previously organized his own dance orchestra, was also a singer and entertainer. Resided in New York City the past 15 years. Was a longtime seasonal regular at Ben Marden's Riviera Club, Fort Lee, NJ. Was single. Some initial confusion concerning his name: "An early casualty list compiled by the Associated Press listed Guy under...his stage name, Guy Howard" (Mansfield News-Journal, 11/30/1942). Erroneously shown as "Guy Albert Howard" (first and last names reversed) on the official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (one of two incorrect surnames on the final compilation of Grove dead, also Vera Ann Cedrone, age 34, listed under the surname "DeCosta"). May be the "entertainer" described by singer Dorothy "Dotty Myles" Metzger, age 17 (Born 3/02/1925. Died as Dorothy M. Brown on 1/21/1967, in New York, NY, throat hemorrhage, age 41), seriously injured, as, "...from downstairs, in the Melody Bar...a funny little drunk..." (True Experiences magazine, October 1948). Was reported by Miss Metzger to have entered the foyer ladies lounge "three times" with (quote), "...a silly grin on his face...an upraised finger, and the one casual word, 'Fire'" (likely but not confirmed the same individual, article was penned by a ghostwriter). Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 10½," 136 lbs.). Obvious physical characteristics: "small digit right hand, amputated"). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. and Ida May (Sell) Guy, of Mansfield, OH. "Overcrowding of funeral homes and morgues in Boston and the general confusion which followed the catastrophe probably will delay release of the body..." (Mansfield News-Journal, 12/01/1942). Burial at Tiffin Cemetery, Tiffin, OH. Middle name Albert.
