Age 26. 84 Prescott Street, Cambridge, MA. Born 12/31/1915, in Windsor, England. Died on 11/29/1942 (Sunday), carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Draftsman at General Electric Co., Lynn, MA. Known as "Jack." Attended a G.E. company stag party of 16 held at the nearby Hotel Lenox to honor departing coworker and fire survivor Frank Weaver, age 25 (Born 9/27/1917. Died 1/09/1992, age 74. Last residence Framingham, MA), of Lynn. Party split into three taxis. Some went home, some to the Grove. With coworkers Elisha Cobb, age 29, of Newton Centre (Newton), MA, and Bartlett Stuart, age 27, of Reading, MA (both dead), entered the club lobby while one other stopped at the Piedmont Street revolving door (survivor Charles Beldotti, age 35, of Somerville, MA. Born 10/18/1907. Died 1/13/2003, age 95. Last residence Needham Heights, MA) to wait for an unnamed fifth man to pay the cab driver. Men were about to check their coats when fire appeared. The Boston Post, 11/30/1942: "Two friends, who escaped, called the family, stating that Haines was right behind them as they smashed one of the doors down and broke out to safety" (refers to party survivors Bryant Fowler, age 27, of Arlington, MA. Born 7/30/1915. Died 10/11/1996, age 81, and Wilbur Sheffield, of Newton Centre, age 30. Born 3/22/1912. Died 10/12/1983, age 71). One of 60 "probable identifications" inventoried Sunday morning by Boston City Hospital at Southern Mortuary (all male). To the U.S. in 1920. Was raised in Belmont, MA. Wife former Edna M. Nickerson, age 26 (Born 9/25/1916. Died as Edna Pillow, 12/13/2006, age 90), married in December 1941. Wife was not present. Full frame (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11½," 195 lbs.). Above G.E. coworker Mr. Beldotti would become the historic last person to enter the club as disaster struck, when he was trapped as the main revolving door jammed (The Boston Post, 3/31/1943): "I just got to the door...when the revolving doors of the club suddenly locked and I was stuck between two of the panels...'). Also: "The door started around to a point where my compartment was within the framework of the entrance, and then it stopped..." (The Boston Globe, 3/31/1943). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. "Bert" and Edith E. (Watson) Haines. Father was prominent head crew rowing coach at Harvard University. Burial at Belmont Cemetery, Belmont. Middle name William.
