Age 26. 52 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA. Born 5/07/1916, in New Rochelle, NY. Died of burns (death certificate). Was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Mass General Hospital. Was an engineer at Submarine Signal Corp. (signalling devices), of Boston, engaged in defense research on precision optical instruments. Leased a cottage with three youths including coworker Walter King, age 29, dead, at 293 Dedham Street, Newton Highlands (Newton), MA. The other two roommates were not present at the blaze. Previously lodged at the home of Mrs. Edith R. Cheney, in Southbridge (address above), from the spring of 1941 until the past June. Kept the Southbridge address as his official residence. Was employed at American Optical Co. (eyewear), of Southbridge, until the past May. Was raised in New Rochelle, NY, and Montreal, P.Q., Canada. Graduate of McGill University, Toronto, Ont. (WWII draft registration, October '40: "U.S. citizen"). Earned a degree from the School of Business Administration, Harvard University. Was single. "Miller was well known as a skier and as the inventor of a non-fogging goggle for skiers" (McGill Daily, Montreal, P.Q., 12/03/1942). Was one of six Grove victims from the southern Worcester County working-class city of Southbridge. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Gray, Sr., and Elsie L. (Whittall) Miller, of Montreal. Father was chairman of the board at Imperial Tobacco Co. of Canada, in Montreal. Burial of his cremated remains occurred at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal. Was the lone Grove victim (of 490) interred outside U.S. soil (the ashes of actor Charles "Buck" Jones, age 50, were scattered over the Pacific Ocean). Middle name Whittall (misspelled "Whitehall" in some news sources and on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety casualties list).
