Age 27. 83 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA. Born on 4/19/1915, in Berkley, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Safety engineer with Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Co., of Chicago, IL, Springfield office. Wife Betty Lee, age 25, also died. Couple was visiting his wife's family in the Boston suburb of Newton, MA, after spending Thanksgiving Day with his parents in the southeastern Massachusetts village of Myricks (Berkley), MA. His remains were brought with those of his wife from the fire scene to Mass General Hospital. Springfield Daily News, 11/30/1942: "Relatives said Winslow probably was a suffocation victim, because there were no signs of burns on his body" (note: it was not unusual for news accounts and death certificates to differ on causes of death). "Ironically a safety engineer in life, Gilbert Winslow...was identified as one of the dead in the blaze" (Boston Evening American, 11/30/1942). Was raised in the small Bristol County community of Myricks (the same village as Miss Mary DeMoura, age 30, victim in a separate party). Was a graduate of Taunton, MA, High School in 1932. Graduated Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1937. Married in 1939. Was the director of the Hampden County Safety Council. Was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve Engineering Corps, status inactive. Medium build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 9," 160 lbs.). With his wife were two of four victims from the western Bay State city of Springfield (also Lieut. William Langhammer, U.S. Army, and Conrad Schorling, both age 26, both patrons in other parties). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. and Lena B. (Macomber) Winslow. Burial with his wife in the Winslow family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery, Taunton. His personal safety-related papers were later donated to the UMass Historical Society collection, where they remained for viewing into the 21st century. Middle name Williams.
