Francis A. O'Brien, Sr.
(1910 - 1942)

Age 32. 25 Stockton Street, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Born on 9/18/1910, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Civilian production foreman, Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston. Was known as "Frank." Attended the afternoon B.C./Holy Cross college football game at Fenway Park with his wife Virginia, age 25, dead, victim Francis Gale, age 29, of Dorchester, and two unnamed friends "said to be saved" (The Boston Post, 11/30/1942). Also present in the football group his older brother James, age 33 (not present), who declined to attend the club because he had worn a sweater and stated he would not feel comfortable. "Francis O'Brien was dead when his body was found in the restaurant; his wife died some time later at the hospital" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA, 11/30/1942). Misreported (with his wife) in the 11/29/1942 Boston Sunday Advertiser to be attached to the large main dining room rear terrace party of cowboy actor Charles "Buck" Jones, age 50, dead. The Boston Post, 12/01/1942: "...The O'Briens annually took in the Holy Cross-Boston College game and then went to supper in a night spot." Recalled decades later by patron and fire survivor Hewson Gray, age 34 (Born 8/20/1908. Died 12/18/1996, age 88. Last residence Waltham, MA), of Waltham, MA, seated in a party at a main dining room table near the front-left corner beside the stage: "O'Brien was the name reservation on the table that they...gave us...We always wondered where the O'Briens sat; that is, where we should have been" (undated 1990s interview with fire safety expert Casey C. Grant, NFPA Journal, Nov/Dec 2007). Employed as a civilian at the Navy shipyard for eight years. Was the father of two infant sons. Was heavyset (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 10½," 215 lbs.). Parents Mr. and Mrs. John and Hannah (Mogan) O'Brien. Burial with his wife at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Middle name Anthony.
