Age 28. 44 High Street, Waltham, MA. Born on 12/27/1913, in Waltham. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Billiards parlor operator at the Hotel Middlesex, 149 Moody Street, Waltham. Also known by his nickname "Babe." At the club in a mixed-gender foursome with his wife Helen, age 26, her married older sister Mrs. Josephine Powell, age 29, and the latter's husband John, age 34, of Cambridge, MA, all dead. Couples had attended the stunning season-ending afternoon 55-to-12 football upset by mediocre (4 wins, 4 losses) Holy Cross over undefeated (8 wins, 0 losses) Boston College at Fenway Park. One of 60 "probable identifications" inventoried Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) by Boston City Hospital at Southern Mortuary (all male). "The identification of Mr. Cafarella was made by an older brother...in Boston yesterday [Sunday] afternoon..." (Waltham News-Tribune, 11/30/1942). Was raised in Waltham. Married in Brockton, MA, June 1941. The couple had no children. Medium build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 9," 175 lbs.). With his wife were two of five victims from the "Watch City" Hub suburb of Waltham (also patrons Miss Grace Evelyn Brown, age 25, Robert Derbyshire, age 23, and Mrs. Mary J. Duggan, age 26). With Mrs. Cafarella were two of 228 victims showing "carbon monoxide poisoning" as the primary cause of death on their death certificates, another 228 (exact) were recorded dead from "burns" (eight others showed both causes). With their companions were two of 56 married couples present in which both spouses lost their lives. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Giuseppe "Joseph" C. and Anna (Cincotta) Cafarella. Burial with his wife at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Pair were two of six Grove casualties interred at the above resting grounds (also Arthur Connelly, age 30, Arthur McLaughlin, age 35, Miss Helen O'Brien, age 19, and Miss Eula Place, age 21, all guests). Middle name Joseph.
