
Age 21. 244 Nevada Street, Newtonville (Newton), MA. Born 8/22/1921, Arlington, MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Employed at Raytheon Manufacturing Co. (radio and electronic devices), Waltham, MA. Was standing in the crowded cellar Melody Lounge with a friend, Miss Gloria Deagle, age 20 (Born 6/29/1922. Died as Gloria C. Doherty on 10/25/2008, age 86. Last residence Medfield, MA), of Newton, survived. Miss Deagle testified at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials that the pair were just starting to leave because there were no seats. Latter recalled Miss Place grabbed her by the arm and said "Look!' as a palm tree went up in a corner. "So she said, 'We'd better get out of here quick.' We started right up the stairs and that's the last I saw of her..." (The Boston Globe, 4/01/1943). Miss Deagle was reported to have told friends, "...that before she lost consciousness she saw Miss Place ascending the stairs ahead of her" (Waltham News-Tribune, 11/30/1942). Moved with her family to Newton at age 4. Was a graduate of Newton High School. Was single. Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Member of the Massachusetts Women's Defense Corps. Address above (shown on her death certificate and on the official Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties) was that of an uncle. One of 14 victims from the city of Newton (including its "villages;" also Miss Eleanor Chiampa, age 15, Elisha Cobb, Jr., age 29, Mrs. Pauline Rifkin, age 56, Arthur Connelly, age 30, Douglas Ober, age 24, Miss Caroline Saphar, age 19, Mrs. Sadie Levin, age 38, Miss Shirley Lubell, age 22, Mr. and Mrs. John "Rollie" and Catherine "Kay" McCann, ages 43 and 32, Arthur McLaughlin, age 35, John Hope, age 46, and Philip Seletsky, age 39, all patrons). Was the lone victim from the village of Newtonville. Parents Mrs. Marie A. (Halloran) and the late Mr. Harry M. Place. Her mother, since remarried (surname Vaughn), died two months later on 2/04/1943 "after an illness" (was buried with her fire-victim daughter). Her mother was one of at least six known parents of Grove casualties to succumb within the first six months following the holocaust. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Middle name Marie.
