
Age 26. 14 Millwood Street, Framingham, MA. Born 7/31/1916, in Caribou, ME. Died of burns (death certificate). No occupation listed (death certificate). Known as "Ethel Mae." In a mixed foursome with her husband Richard E. "Dick," age 26 (Born 7/11/1916. Died 4/08/1993, age 76. Last residence Savannah, GA), survived, also John E. Murphy, age 25, of Framingham, and a coworker of Mr. Murphy, Miss Verna McDevitt, age 18, of Hudson, MA, latter two dead. Husband, an inspector for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, was to depart next Monday for Officers' Candidate School, U.S. Army, at Fort Devens, Ayer, MA (instead was hospitalized through December 22). Her unidentified body at Chelsea Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA, was detailed in the 11/30/1942 Boston Daily Record: "Woman. About 22 years old. Five feet four inches. 120 pounds. Wearing a green dress with green buttons set with imitation pearl. A gold wedding ring with the initials 'A.E.W.-E.M.C.' [sic]...Black pumps purchased at A. S. Berg's, Boston." Framingham News, 11/30/1942: "Two brothers of Mrs. Williams went to Boston and searched for her for hours before the body was located." Her remains were identified at Northern Mortuary by a wedding ring engraved "R.E.W. to E.M.C." inside the band. Was raised in the remote northern Maine city of Caribou. Pair met as underclassmen at the University of Maine, Orono, ME, in 1935. Graduated the University of Maine in 1938, where she was an honorary colonel of the R.O.T.C. corps. Was head of the home economics department at Washburn High School, Washburn, ME, at the time of her 6/19/1939 marriage, in Caribou, ME. Survived by a daughter Barbara, age 3. Was to reside with her daughter and parents in her Down East hometown while her husband served. Middle name was misspelled "May" (with a "y" instead of an "e" at the end) in some news accounts (correct spelling "Mae" on her death certificate and on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties). One of three Grove victims from the Middlesex County town of Framingham (also patron Frank Homer Armstrong, age 29, and the above Mr. Murphy). With her husband was one of 25 married couples present where one spouse died and the other survived. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Otto L. and Mabel A. (West) Currier. Burial in the family lot at Saint Louis Cemetery, Limestone, ME (correct middle name gravestone spelling of "Mae"). "The many floral offerings bespoke the many friends she leaves to mourn her passing" (Bangor Daily News, 12/08/1942).
