In a mixed-gender foursome with her fiancé Joseph Crowley, Jr., age 22, also Patrick Keleher, age 24, both also of West Roxbury, and Miss M. Elizabeth "Betty" Flood, age 19, of Quincy, MA, all four died. Met her companions in town for dinner after the others had attended the stunning afternoon Holy Cross 55-to-12 football upset of nationally top-ranked Boston College (the undefeated Eagles had outscored their opponents 249-to-14 in eight prior games) at Fenway Park. "As she and her friends admired her engagement ring and planned her wedding which was to be held on Christmas Day, Miss Eleanor M. McCarthy...went to her death at Cocoanut Grove" (The Boston Post, 11/30/1942). Her remains were transported to Southern Mortuary, Boston. Was a graduate of Roslindale High School, Boston. An older brother Lieut. Arthur J. McCarthy, U.S. Army (serving in Egypt), was engaged to Miss M. Eleanor Flood, an older sister of Miss Flood above (neither was present, the planned marriage never occurred). With her fiancé were two of 34 fire victims present known to be engaged (20 men and 14 women). Pair were two of 464 club guests killed in addition to 26 non-patrons deceased (including 17 employees, 6 visiting entertainers, one War Bonds salesgirl, also two outside passing rescuers), a total of 490 dead.
