Douglas J. Ober
(1918 - 1942)

Age 24. 40 Woodbine Terrace, Auburndale (Newton), MA. Born on 4/07/1918, in Quincy, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Mass General Hospital. Assembler, Holtzer-Cabot Electrical Co., Inc., Boston. Was attending the club with his fiancée Miss Caroline Saphar, age 19, also of Auburndale, also dead. Pair had visited the Grove a month prior in a group including friend Irving Wickes, age 35 (Born 1/23/1907. Died 7/18/1969, age 62. Last address Dorchester, MA), of Dorchester (Boston), MA, the latter not present. Mr. Wickes wrote an open letter to a Hub newspaper in November 1960: "As the bartender stirred our drinks I turned to my friend, Douglas Ober, and toasted him. 'Here's to your marriage,' I said, 'may you have a long life of happiness'" (Boston Sunday Advertiser, 11/27/1960). Added: "It was exactly one month later, to the night, that Douglas and his fiancée died on the very spot where I had wished them joy." Graduate of Newton High School and of Newton Trade School. Was a graduate of Franklin Union School (private technical college), Boston. Had just obtained a government position as a tester of motors for battleships. His fiancée was the granddaughter of Clarence E. Beech, ironically inventor of the widely-employed "Gamewell" fire alarm system. Was tall and very thin (WWII draft registration, October '40: 6' 1," 140 lbs.). With Miss Saphar were two of 14 claimed from the city of Newton (including its dozen-plus "villages"), and two of three dead from the Newton village of Auburndale (also Arthur Connelly, age 30, victim in a separate party). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Leon E. and Mary F. (Foster) Ober, same address. Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale (Boston), MA. Was one of 30 Grove casualties interred at Mount (or "Old") Calvary Cemetery (8 burials) and its adjoining New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA (22 burials), more than at any other single location. Middle name Julious.
