When the blaze appeared they clasped hands, picked up their coats and started for an exit. Miss O'Hara to a reporter (quote): "Dorothy grabbed my hand. The lights went out - and she let go suddenly..." (The Boston Herald, 11/30/1942). "When the panic-stricken crowd rushed for the doors Miss O'Hara was pushed out, while Miss Scherer fell and was caught in the heap of struggling victims" (Daily Evening Item, Lynn, 12/01/1942). Salem Evening News, Salem, MA, 11/30/1942: "Nineteen-year-old Florence O'Hara...her lips swollen and bruised, made her sad way homeward shortly before dawn yesterday [Sunday]. Her girlhood chum, Dorothy Scherer...was unaccounted for." Miss O'Hara was not hospitalized, glumly informed the 11/30/1942 Boston Evening American: "I have just identified Dorothy's body." Was raised in Lynn. Attended Lynn English High School. Had observed her 20th birthday the past Monday. One of six fire victims from the city of Lynn (also S/Sergt. Anthony Marotta, U.S.M.C., age 23. his wife Alice, age 20, Grove waiter Christes Roumeliotis, age 25, Mrs. Helen Simpson, age 35, and Miss Leah Sudnovsky, age 23).
