
Age 59. 96 Monk Street, Stoughton, MA. Born on 4/20/1883, Perugia, Italy. Died of burns (death certificate), or suffocation (news accounts). Foreman at Panther-Panco Rubber Co., of Stoughton. In a main dining room party of seven, five died. His wife Adele, age 51 (Born 4/16/1891, Perugia, Italy. Died 2/23/1979, age 87. Same name and address at death), escaped uninjured. Group was celebrating the imminent release of Mrs. Jeanette Zall, age 35, of Plymouth, MA, dead, from an extended hospital stay. Had dinner reserved at the nearby Club Mayfair but arrived late and the reservations were not honored. Trenton Sunday Times-Advertiser, Trenton, NJ, 12/06/1942: "Mr. Penardi was rescued from the building before the flames reached him and was...rushed to a hospital, but he succumbed soon afterward of suffocation." Body was then removed to Northern Mortuary, Boston. His wife jumped to safety through a foyer bathroom rear window with a female patron from another party (survivor Miss Anne McArdle, age 18, of Lawrence, MA. Born 3/28/1924. Died as Anne S. Hintlian on 5/15/2004, age 80) to a blind lower courtyard below. To the U.S. in 1892. Married in 1909, in Trenton, NJ. Accompanied Panther-Panco when the rubber firm moved from New Jersey to Stoughton in 1914. "He was always considered a valuable man by his employers and was always well thought of by the men under him" (Brockton Daily Enterprise, Brockton, MA, 11/30/1942). Survived by adult sons Angelo, age 31, and Arthur, age 27, and one grandson, Paul, age 3. Latter (a son of Angelo) was the only known minor to lose a grandparent but no parents in the fire (his parents were not present). Wife in August 1943 brought action for $20,000 against acting club manager James Welansky: "It was his duty she alleges to maintain and furnish the patrons with a safe and suitable place..." (Quincy Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA, 8/11/1943). Was the sixth-oldest patron known present and the second-oldest deceased (after a victim in another party, Isaac Gordon, age 61). Was third-oldest Grove fatality overall (also service cashier Miss Katherine "Kate" Swett, age 67). Ironic observation by a grandson, Art Penardi (in March 2025): "The one bright note from this family tragedy was our parents, Arthur and Evelyn (Jachetti) Penardi, began their relationship after meeting...at our grandfather's funeral." Parents Mr. and Mrs. Angelo and Teresa (Congiunti) Penardi. Burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. His widow was buried with her late husband upon her February 1979 death.
