Age 26. 24 Fairmount Street, Springfield, MA. Born on 8/09/1916, Brattleboro, VT. Died of burns (death certificate). Clerk in the purchasing department, Westinghouse Electrical and Mfg. Co., East Springfield, MA, plant. Attended the big afternoon B.C./Holy Cross football game with his companion and coworker Miss Mary Rose O'Sullivan, age 25, of Holyoke, MA, dead, also John Lightcap, age 22 (Born 4/19/1920. Died 6/29/1994, age 74. Last residence Springfield), of East Longmeadow, MA, and Miss Mary McCarthy, age 25 (Born 8/30/1917. Died as Mary G. Lightcap on 3/30/1965, pancreatic cancer, age 46. Last residence East Longmeadow, MA), of Springfield, latter two survived. Foursome was gathered in the club foyer preparing to leave when he and Miss O'Sullivan returned into the main dining hall. Miss McCarthy at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials: "Conrad came out to us once and said they wanted to see the second floor show, but it never went on" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 3/30/1943). "...Couple...danced with death when they swung into a few final turns on the dance floor..." (Springfield Daily News, 11/30/1942). Other pair safely escaped through the Piedmont Street revolving door. His remains were identified at Massachusetts General Hospital by papers in his billfold. "Relatives at the home here said that...his body was one of the first to be identified" (Springfield Union, 11/30/1942). From Vermont to Springfield in infancy. Was a graduate of Technical High School, Springfield, in 1933. Had attended Northeastern University. Was a widely known baseball player with semipro teams. Was leader of the Springfield area "Swing Kings" dance band, played saxophone and clarinet. One of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47 (the latter two were found innocent of all charges). Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11," 165 lbs.). Parents Mr. and Mrs. William C. and Emily H. (Ericson) Schorling, same address. Parents divorced in April 1943, five months after the tragic death of their son. Their companion couple (both survived) married in October 1943. Burial in the family lot at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield. Middle name Ericson.
